Representatives from AT&T and the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority) today joined U.S. Congressman Rob Bresnahan, local first responders, public safety officials, and community leaders in Drums, Luzerne County, to highlight how FirstNet® Built with AT&T—the only nationwide 5G network built specifically for America’s first responders—is transforming communications for public safety.
As part of ongoing investments, AT&T recently activated a new hilltop cell site in Drums, enhancing coverage and capacity around Butler Drive and Old Turnpike Road. Additional sites in Hazleton (Jeansville Road and State Route 424) and Larksville (East State Street and Railroad Street) are also delivering improved connectivity. The Larksville site was one of 1,000 sites nationwide deployed under AT&T and the FirstNet Authority’s 10-year investment initiative, expanding access to Band 14 spectrum, public safety’s dedicated “VIP lane” for reliable communications.
“Public safety communications are about keeping our communities safe. These new sites in Luzerne County give first responders the vital tools they need to work efficiently and effectively,” said U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan, Jr. “Expanded access to 5G is also great news for residents and businesses who rely on secure and reliable connectivity every day.”
Following the announcement, local leaders and first responders convened at Valley Regional Fire & Rescue for a FirstNet roundtable, underscoring the platform’s role in strengthening emergency response.
“FirstNet is becoming a crucial ally for public safety in our region,” said Brice Dalrymple, Fire Chief, Valley Regional Fire & Rescue. “This technology will enhance our capabilities when the situation demands it most.”
FirstNet is the nation’s only purpose-built broadband communications platform for first responders, shaped by Congress and the public safety community following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Delivered through a public-private partnership between AT&T and the FirstNet Authority, the network provides priority access, preemption, and nationwide Band 14 coverage—ensuring first responders can communicate seamlessly during emergencies, large-scale events, and everyday operations.
“The FirstNet Authority is expanding the network to meet public safety’s evolving needs,” said Dave Buchanan, Director of Public Safety Engagement, FirstNet Authority. “These sites in Luzerne County deliver on that promise, strengthening the ability of first responders to protect their communities.”
“With more than 1,800 communities across Pennsylvania now relying on FirstNet, these investments are vital to ensuring seamless connectivity,” added David Kerr, President, AT&T Pennsylvania. “We are proud to support first responders across the Commonwealth and to expand the network that keeps them connected when it matters most.”
Today, nearly 2,300 wireless sites in Pennsylvania carry Band 14 spectrum, with capacity available for AT&T customers when not in use by public safety. This continued expansion reinforces FirstNet’s role as the trusted communications backbone for first responders statewide.
