Critical communications operator ASTRID is continuing to bring the mission-critical communications industry closer to the operational community, following its recent MCX Discovery Days.

The latest initiative brought together international terminal equipment manufacturers and representatives from Belgium’s emergency and security services, creating a direct environment for technology providers and users to exchange requirements, demonstrate solutions and assess the practical potential of Next Generation Communications (NextGenCom).

The engagement comes as ASTRID continues to develop the next generation of communications supporting Belgium’s public-safety community. ASTRID’s roadmap encompasses 4G/5G communications alongside its established TETRA environment, with interoperability and a gradual transition forming important elements of the evolution.

From Terminal Technology to Operational Reality

For ASTRID and its user community, the terminal is a critical part of the wider MCX ecosystem. The organisation has already evaluated major operating-system platforms and specifies compatibility requirements for 4G/5G terminals, while certain use cases also require compatibility with TETRA for backup capabilities.

The manufacturer sessions therefore provided more than an opportunity to showcase new devices. They enabled direct dialogue around how emerging terminal capabilities can support the realities of frontline operations—including reliability, security, robustness, availability and ease of use.

ASTRID's approach also reflects its established user-driven model. The organisation works with emergency and security services to understand operational requirements and translates those needs into communications products and services.

Preparing Belgium for Next-Generation MCX

The evolution from traditional narrowband mission-critical communications toward broadband 4G/5G MCX is opening the door to richer data, applications, video and other digital services. ASTRID has previously highlighted the potential of 4G/5G broadband technologies for the future of critical communications while maintaining a focus on reliability, security and affordability.

By bringing terminal manufacturers and operational users together at an early stage, ASTRID is helping ensure that next-generation communications technology is assessed not only from a technical perspective, but also against the practical demands of Belgium’s emergency and security services.
